The Past Does Not Dictate the Future

my-wishI love music. I have tremendous respect for musicians and singers, but especially the writers. To be able to write lyrics and music that touch people or make them feel something takes so much talent. I love it when I come across a new song that moves me, that is clever, or just makes me dance.

It tells me how much power there is in music. So I guess I shouldn’t be surprised when I listen to an old favorite and it suddenly has new meaning.

I am a big fan of country music. I know it’s not very country anymore, but it still speaks to a part of me that other genres don’t and I think it always will. I’m also a big fan of Rascall Flatts. I was a fan before everyone knew who they were. I like most of their songs but one in particular has had special meaning for me – ‘My Wish’.

There were a lot of years where there was a hole in my life where my parents should have been. I was lost in confusion as to why the two people who should have loved me most, without condition decided to choose their religion over me. I’m sure they saw it differently. Perspective is a bitch after all.

So this song spoke to me. This is all the little girl inside of me ever wanted. Someone to say ‘go, do, I’ll be here for you when you get back’. Thankfully, I have that now, so when I heard this song again the other day it hit me in a totally unexpected way.

I knew from a very early age that I didn’t want to have children. I know it may sound strange, but I was pretty young when I just knew having kids wasn’t for me. You can imagine my surprise when I eventually married a man who already had a child.

We were all so young when we met. There were complications that come with being a step-parent that eventually got easier, but man it was hard, especially in the beginning. I was still a kid myself and here I was helping with a 2-year-old. If nothing else it reaffirmed my decision not to have children.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t hate children. I don’t turn my nose up when I see a baby or toddler. In fact, I love kids when they hit 4 or 5. They’re learning to talk in complete sentences and still have no filters. It’s great to have a conversation with them.

Fast forward 20 years. Yep, 20 years. The 2-year-old I stared at with something like panic in the beginning is turning 22 this month. For the life of me I have no idea where the time went. He was always a great kid and he’s turned into a wonderful man. He’s finding his own path and making the world a better place. I’m proud and humbled to be able to say that I had a hand in raising him.

So back to the song. I can’t express how grateful I am to be able to be the parent I never had and finally have this song mean something else.

The past does not dictate the future.

Please take a minute to read the lyrics here and find the song to listen to even if you’re not a parent or a country music fan. I’m sure there’s someone in your life who could benefit from this type of acceptance…

‘My Wish’ – Rascall Flatts

I hope the days come easy and the moments pass slow,
And each road leads you where you wanna go,
And if you’re faced with a choice, and you have to choose,
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.
And if one door opens to another door closed,
I hope you keep on walkin’ till you find the window,
If it’s cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile.
But more than anything, more than anything

My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you’re out there getting where you’re getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.

I hope you never look back, but you never forget,
All the ones who love you, in the place you live,
I hope you always forgive, and you never regret,
And you help somebody every chance you get,
Oh, you find God’s grace, in every mistake,
And always give more than you take.
But more than anything, yeah, more than anything

My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you’re out there getting where you’re getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish. Yeah, yeah.

My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you’re out there getting where you’re getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish (my wish, for you).

This is my wish (my wish, for you)
I hope you know somebody loves you (my wish, for you).
May all your dreams stay big (my wish, for you)
